Martin Freeman plays Small Faces singer Steve Marriott
Watch Martin Freeman (Sherlock, The Hobbit) inhabit the role of mod music icon Steve Marriott in a new short film.
‘Midnight of My Life’ is set in July 1985 and while Rock and Roll’s great and good are strutting their stuff at Wembley for Live Aid, Steve Marriott is propping up the bar of a dingy pub in Putney waiting to play to a small crowd of boozers. While he waits for the rest of his band, bitter and drunk, an encounter with a young revival Mod restores Steve’s faith.
Phil Davis, best known as a British character actor of over 40 films from Quadrophenia to Vera Drake made his return to directing after 12 years to direct Freeman alongside Theo Barklem-Biggs (Kingsman: The Secret Service/The Inbetweeners Movie), Jack Baggs (Pride) and newcomer Elliot Brown.
Phil was coaxed back to directing by a script from new writer Nina Gersteberger and her producer Hatty Hodgson who met at London Film School.
Nina says of the script “Midnight is a film about integrity, about passion, about regrets and ultimately realising why you are doing what you are doing.”
Phil Davis said, “Steve Marriott was a brilliant songwriter, mean guitarist and had one of the all time great rock and roll voices. This little film is a fitting tribute to him and all the other talents who fell from grace but carried on playing because they loved it.”
A lifelong Marriott fan himself, Martin Freeman comments “Marriott has been a huge figure in my life since my teens. I think he had a funny relationship with fame and being a pop star, which I totally understand. I do a pretty mean Steve impression on left-handed air guitar, but miming right-handed with the real thing was a bit of a challenge!”
